Reduced Inductions

It takes time to develop the skills needed for a successful career in teaching which is why all ECTs are entitled to a two-year induction programme. The default expectation should be that all ECTs complete a full two-year induction, not only to allow them time to demonstrate that they have met the Teachers’ Standards, but also to allow them to benefit from training, study and mentoring and to have time to apply this to their teaching practice and develop their skills without the pressures of a full timetable.

As set out in the statutory induction guidance, in exceptional individual cases, a headteacher or ECT might request a reduced induction period on the basis that the ECT has significant experience of teaching whole classes which would enable them to demonstrate proficiency against the teacher standards.

What to do if you think your ECT qualifies for a reduced induction.

If you believe your ECT meets the criteria for a reduced induction, you must submit your interest via this form.

The AB Team will review the initial request and be in contact to follow up on next steps, which could be:

  • A request for further information to include; school name, years worked, role held, level of responsibility for whole class teaching, planning and assessment.
  • Advising that the ECT does not meet the requirements to proceed further with this request.

Any requests for reduced induction must come in the first two weeks of each term (Autumn 1, Spring 1 or Summer 1) to be considered for completion at the end of the reporting period.

If, upon reviewing the request, we believe that the ECTs experience could qualify them to reduce induction, we will arrange to undertake:

  • A lesson observation of the ECT
  • Meetings with ECT & Induction Tutor

If a reduced induction is agreed, the final report will be updated in ECT Manager to reflect this early completion.
